Review: Intex Explorer K2 Kayak, YellowThe Intex Explorer K2 kayak is a great 2 person kayak, that can be used on rivers and lakes. This kayak is aimed at recreational users that want a easy-to-store, budget friendly way of getting out on the water. It does feature the usual high build quality from Intex that we have become accustomed to.
Having said that, this kayak is priced below $200. Keep that in mind when comparing kayaks, and when you read reviews about this kayak. Sure, you will find users complaining about things, but when you pay less than $200 for an inflatable kayak, you have to keep in mind that you are not getting a top of the line kayak.
Let’s dive in with my Intex Explorer K2 Review
The K2 looks very sporty in the yellow finish, and you are bound to be seen by all when on the water. Which not only makes a statement, but is also great for safety when out on the water. With its 30 guage vinyl construction, and the stable I beam floor, the Explorer is good value for money.
The things I don’t like
The travel bag that comes with the kayak isn’t of the greatest quality. Even though this kayak is very competitively priced, I would have expected the smart people at Intex to take more care with the bag. Let’s be honest, the kayak will spend alot of time being transported in the bag.
I suggest getting a cheap duffel bag to store and transport your Explorer.
The Explorer comes with a set of 84” paddles. I don’t like the fact that these aren’t adjustable. This makes the paddles unwieldy for children, and they will struggle to get any real purchase with such a long paddle.
The K2 makes up for this by being super easy to maneuvre by one person, but it still detracts from the overall impression of the kayak. If you go kayaking with the kids often, I would suggest buying a separate adjustable paddle for them.
What I really like about the Intex Explorer
The Explorer is well built, and is easy to assemble. It takes about 15 minutes to put together, and I am sure with some practice that will come down to 10 minutes. It inflates and deflates easily, and will easily fit in the trunk of a car. When the kayak is deflated, it fits nicely into a travel bag that can easily be carried by a single person.
This vessel is also quite stable, and very comfortable. I have been less comfortable in kayaks three times the price of the K2.
Let’s recap the positives:
- Easy to inflate and deflate
- Stable so you know you are safe from flipping on calm waters
- Bright colours ensure high visibility, which means other vessels will easily see you. This is huge for safety, as most kayaks aren’t easily spotted from other vessels.
- Comes with paddles, pump and carry bag, so you get everything you need to get out on the water. No additional expenses.
- Enough space for two people, with room for storing water, food and other equipment
- Light enough (at 30lbs) for one person to handle easily
For those that aren’t super serious about kayaking, and just want a fun time out on the water for a reasonable price, the Explorer K2 is the answer.
